If you’re changing from the MRT, leave yourself time to reach the LRT platform and check the display for your destination. Arriving at the station at 12.38am is cutting it a little close.

Punggol wasn’t always one stop from the end

For more than 20 years, Punggol was the end of the North East Line. The line opened between HarbourFront and Punggol in 2003. Punggol Coast opened on 10 December 2024, taking the line one station further north. If you still think of Punggol as the last stop, that’s probably why.

The LRT grew in stages too. It began operating in 2005, but the West Loop only started passenger service in June 2014, with three stations: Nibong, Sumang and Soo Teck. The two loops on today’s map didn’t arrive together.

There’s a bit of the old coast inside the station

Next time you pass through Punggol MRT, look for Goh Beng Kwan’s Water, Landscape and Future. The glass artwork draws on the sea, sky and days spent at Punggol beach.

The artist layered and fused hand-painted glass, embedding fragments of material within it. The result changes with the light and the angle you’re looking from. It’s a small reminder of the Punggol seaside, inside a station most of us are just trying to get through.

Probably one to look at on your way out, rather than while rushing for the last LRT.
